Nearing Home: Life, Faith, and Finishing Well by Billy Graham

Don’t you just love the title of this book?  Nearing Home – Life Faith, and Finishing Well.  I knew instantly that this would be a book that would be dear to my heart…and I was not disappointed.

The personal experiences that Billy Graham humbly shares were  so touching.   As I have quickly become part of the older generation myself, this book has given me so much hope.   It was wonderful to read that Billy Graham chose to address this issue of aging through his own life experiences and those of family and friends.  He talked about how we should use our golden years to continue to honor God. The wisdom that he shared was of great comfort to me on a very personal level as well.

We serve such an awesome God, and knowing that the Lord will not forsake us in our final stretch toward home is great news!  This was a very moving thought for me.  Throughout the book, Mr. Graham shares his thoughts and answers to so many question using the Bible as a references.

Mr. Graham talked about investments, retiring at the right time in our life, planning ahead by having a will prepared, working out any issues of forgiveness that you may have with others, etc.  This book caused me to think about my life, legacy and what I would be remembered for.  It is definitely an eye opener.

I would definitely recommend this book.  To the young people… knowing that as your parents age…how they can help them through the senior years and to encourage them during that time of their life.  It will also appeal to the older generation to help them prepare for their senior years.

Couples of the Bible: A One-Year Devotional Study to Draw You Closer to God and Each Other by Robert and Bobbie Wolgemuth

This is a devotional for couples that will last an entire year. Each week you read one chapter and focus on a couple in the Bible. The authors, Robert and Bobbie Wolgemuth, bring the couples to life using their creative writing abilities.

Each chapter is broken down into five days and different areas of the couples life are highlighted. The devotional stays consistent each week. Although the characters may be different for that week, the format is the same for that particular day. The study ends each week with practical advice on how you can apply what you learned to your relationship as a married couple.

It was a wonderful experience talking through the daily questions. It was interesting thinking about the couples in a different light than ever before. It allowed us to dive deeper into God’s Word and to learn so much about these couples.

I found this devotional to be a wonderful opportunity to spend time with my husband in prayer and exploring the Word of God. If you want to draw closer together as a couple and God, this is a good choice for you.

This also would make an excellent gift for a newly married couple to help them spend quality time with their spouse and to God. I wish that we had received something like this when we were starting our life as a married couple.

Beyond Heaven's Door by Max Lucado

This book is a 30-day devotional that always begins with a scripture verse. The daily reading is relatively short. However, at the end of each daily devotional, there is a time for you to reflect on your life. The author, Max Lucado helps direct your thoughts with questions that will help you to dig deep within yourself.

Max Lucado is a wonderful writer and his writing quickly captured my attention. I knew that this was going to be a very thought provoking devotional before I even finished reading the introduction to the book. His words seemed to flow from the pages as I read the introduction. I was totally mesmerized.

As I progressed daily through this devotional, I was definitely challenged I lingered for days about having a heart more like Jesus.  Wouldn't you love to have a heart more like Jesus?  This was just one of the reflections that I spend hours pondering.

This book reminds you that this world is not our final destination.  As a believer in Christ, our next adventure will be face to face with Jesus.  It is a wonderful book that will make you look forward to what is to come.

My only criticism of the book was the different Bible translations that were used throughout the book.  However, I would definitely recommend this book to someone that is looking to grow in their walk with the Lord.
